Mantra Madness: What is Mantra & Why Do I Love it so Much?

Yoga meditation in bed

MAN’ means mind. ‘TRA’ means the heat of life. ‘RA’ means sun. So, mantra is a powerful combination of words which, if recited, takes the vibratory affect of each of your molecules into the infinity of the cosmos. This is called ‘Mantra’.”
-Yogi Bhajan

To simplify, I like to think of it as “MAN” means mind and “TRA” means to tune the vibration. Mantra is a sound current which tunes and controls mental vibration. Think of it as “mind projection”, a technical device for regulating the mind. It can be a word or set of words, or a combination of syllables which help focus the mind. Such words have enormous power and help quite the inner dialogue, the constant chatter that goes on in the mind.

A mantra is a sound that produces a vibration that brings us to a higher frequency. Chanting mantra is a technique to liberate the mind from undesired habits and thoughts. Mantras or tools for tuning us into frequencies that allow us to choose habits and thoughts that support who we are and how we wish to act and think. We can actually reprogram our mind in our body at a cellular level by consistent chanting of mantras.

Mantras have many affects which include the following:

  • Calm and focus the mind
  • Reduce tension & lower blood pressure
  • Cleanse subconscious programming and fears
  • Balance the chakra energies
  • Connect and synchronize the hemispheres of the brain
  • Increase the healing response in the mind, body, spirit

Next to breathing, the use of mantra is the most important aspect of the practice of Kundalini Yoga. There are many mantras, each one having its on qualities, rhythm and effects. There are two types of mantras frequently used in kundalini yoga.

Bij – is like a seed. It is the name of God planted inside of you, in your heart, where it will grow and spread its radiance throughout your aura. Examples of this are mantras such as “Sat Nam” and “Wahe Guru.”

Ashtang – means “eight fold” and this vibration acts as a stimulant that balances the entire brain. Examples of this are mantras such as the”Adi Shakti,” “Guru Gaitri,” and “Miracle Mantra.” “
